Common Food Allergens
Signs may be dermatologic with skin reactions such as itching, scratching, redness, hotspots, excessive licking; or may be gastrointestinal with vomiting and diarrhea.
- Main allergen in food is proteins
- 2-3 food sources are usually the cause
- Sensitivities show up as early as 2 months old in dogs, but statistically from age 2-6 years; and usually show up in cats by 2 years of age.
- Allergies can appear with foods they have eaten for two or more years and suddenly develop sensitivity that will last the pet's lifetime.
- Introduce a new single protein/carbohydrate
